Welcome to the November instalment of Social Butterfly – TCD’s state-of-social-media wrap with Digital Content Producer Tessa Charters.
As always there is a lot going on in the world of social media. But never fear, you’ve got me to give you the rundown.
Let’s jump into it!
It’s Elon’s world, and we’re all just living in it…
After what feels like the longest time, Elon Musk has officially taken over Twitter in his next move towards world domination. Unsurprisingly, Musk got straight to work with the firing of several top level executives.
While it’s likely to be an entertainingly messy few months, the proposed loosening of standards for the policing of harmful content such as misinformation and hate speech has me concerned. Will it have people boycotting the platform in large numbers? Unlikely. Will it breed more internet idiots? Probably.
Earlier in the month, Twitter also rolled out the ability to edit tweets. It’s currently only available to Twitter Blue members, but are there any other social media managers out there wiping the sweat off their foreheads at the thought of not having to panic delete a Tweet with a typo?
In another move to help us professionals on Twitter, we also now have access to a new suite of analytics and resources with ‘Professional Home’.
Are we really in the Metaverse era?
Facebook plans to spend $10 billion this year on its Metaverse division, but has Mark Zuckerberg lost his touch?
If I’m being completely honest, I don’t even really understand this whole Metaverse thing, and I’m not the only sceptic. Investors are less than happy with Zuckerberg’s spending spree, with stocks imploding.
But it’s not all bad news for brands and creators, as Meta increases its watchdog status on intellectual property across its apps and adds new ad options for the increasingly popular Reels.
Instagram unpauses
The rollout of new features for Instagram seems to have picked back up this month.
Testing of multiple links in user bios is well underway, which is sad for platforms like Linktree and Link In Bio, but it means one less step for social media managers – yay! Also in the testing phase is the ability to add a song to your profile *cough* Myspace *cough*.
Meanwhile, in-app scheduling and media kits are rumoured to be on the way soon.
What else?
Pinterest partnered with The Louvre to amp up the app’s presence in the video space; Snapchat is trying to hold onto its place in the game with the introduction of ‘Director Mode’; TikTok pivots into making still images easier to share (sorry, what?); and YouTube is introducing handles as a way to identify your channel.
Until next time…
